MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CUMBERLAND TOWN COUNCIL

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER Video

The special meeting of the Cumberland Town Council was called to order at 7:00 PM by Council President Kinch.  For the record, five council members were present.  Councilor Beaulieu arrived at 7:06 p.m.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 

Recognition of Fire Captain DiRosario for his off-duty bravery and heroic actions (Presented by Councilor Shaw, Representative Mia Ackerman, and Senator Brian Thompson) Video

Councilor Shaw opened the ceremony, acknowledging attendees including Senator Thompson, Representative Ackerman, fire board members, the chief, the mayor, and council members. He highlighted Captain Eric DiRosario's act of bravery on December 15, 21025 when he ensured the safe evacuation of a neighbor's burning home while off duty, showcasing the courage common among Cumberland firefighters.

Chief Anderson, who started his firefighting career alongside Captain DiRosario, praised him as a trusted colleague demonstrating leadership, professionalism, and accountability. He emphasized that these qualities have earned Captain DiRosario respect and trust within the department.

Senator Thompson thanked Councilman Shaw and reflected on the heroism of first responders like Captain DiRosario, noting their daily courage. He emphasized that this recognition celebrated both Captain DiRosario's individual bravery and the fire department's spirit of service.

Representative Ackerman expressed gratitude for the community's spirit, lauding Captain DiRosario's actions as inspirational and being part of an admirable team. Formal citations from the Rhode Island House and Senate, recognizing Captain DiRosario’s exceptional courage, were presented.

Councilor Shaw expressed thanks to neighboring departments for their support during the fire.

Mutter commended the seamless cooperation between Cumberland’s public safety leaders, noting that the community does not take their collaborative spirit for granted.  During the presentation of the official citation, the Mayor praised Captain DiRosario’s leadership, specifically highlighting his ability to organize critical information for incoming units. Mutter remarked that DiRosario’s professionalism, commitment to his community and neighbors, and decisive response represent the pinnacle of public service.
