Middletown Public Schools No. 1095
Student Involvement in Decision-Making
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN DECISION-MAKING
Students are in a unique position to make positive contributions to the improvement of the educational program and to the operation of a more effective school system.
Therefore, it is the School Committee’s belief that students, in keeping with their level of maturity, should be encouraged to participate in the development of policies, regulations, and procedures that affect them. Their participation in decision-making shall be considered part of the educational process. To this end, each year a student from Middletown High School shall be recommended by the principal and appointed by the Middletown School Committee as a non-voting member of the Middletown School Committee.
As appropriate to the age of students, class or school organizations and school government organizations, such as student councils, may be formed to offer practice in self-government and to serve as channels for the expression of student ideas and opinions.
The Committee should take into consideration student opinions in establishing policies that directly affect student programs, activities, privileges, and other areas of student sensitivity; however, it is expected that students shall proceed through the recognized administrative channels.
