A. Call to Order
Stephanie Canter called the January 22, 2019 School Committee work session to order at 7:02 PM.
Michelle Brousseau expressed concern about a School Committee member (Sarah Markey) attending a NEA-SK closed meeting. Alycia Collins asked that this item not be discussed until Ms. Markey arrived at the meeting.
Alycia Collins asked the community to have proper decorum this evening.
A. Discussion/Action: School Committee Budget Work Session
Sarah Markey-Vice Chair arrived at 7:06 PM.
The Superintendent reviewed the PowerPoint presentation of questions from School Committee members. She also reviewed the budget PowerPoint. Discussion ensued.
A. Comments from the Community
1. Jonathan Daly-LaBelle complimented the School Committee on adding back positions and asking the Town Council to do their job. He stated that prior School Committees were doing the job of the Town Council.
2. Nicole Mulanaphy spoke about school closure and operational savings and the difference between a 1% PTT to schools and a 2.5%. She discussed DLI and elementary Spanish, HS block schedule and RGB’s work.
3. Diane Paolino spoke in support of SEL, and asked that the School Committee not re-district in September or make any major changes to configuration.
4. Cadence Hansen asked the School Committee not to re-district or make any major changes to configuration.
5. Karen McGlynn was concerned that the bond would not be approved by the SK voters. She expressed concern that the discussion about re-districting and changing grade configurations and locations was stressing out parents and children. She spoke in support of the technology coaches. She coached our Lego team; they qualified for states and ranked 24th out of 40 teams in grades 4-8.
6. Valerie Speredelozzi spoke in support of DLI and making it accessible to all families.
7. Alicia Monnes spoke in support of teacher assistants and asked not to reduce administrators. She asked for a long term plan.
8. Dorald Beasley returned his “I Love SK Schools” signs. He expressed concern that many students are going to charter, private, and other CTE programs.
9. Lauren Weinstock thanked the School Committee and recommended the URI psychology practicum students as a resource. PPS Director Eagan commented that we utilize the practicum students currently. Dr. Weinstock commented on transportation inefficiencies and asked the School Committee to look into making them more efficient.
