STATE OF RHODE ISLAND, COUNTY OF NEWPORT
The Town Council of the Town of Tiverton, County, and State aforesaid held a Joint Workshop with the School Committee and the Budget Committee on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Tiverton High School Library, 100 N. Brayton Road.
Council President Edwards V, School Committee Chairman Diane Farnworth and Budget Committee Chair Mary Wall called their respective meetings to order at approximately 6:00 PM.
All members and attendees stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Committee member roll calls commenced.
Town Council
President John G. Edwards V, Vice President David J. Paull, Councilors Deborah G. Janick, Denise M. deMedeiros,
Craig R. Committo, Blake B. Hayden and David Perry were present. Interim Town Administrator Jones, Solicitor Marcello, Clerk Chabot, and Deputy Clerk Veegh were also present.
School Committee
School Committee Chair Diane Farnworth, Vice Chair Deborah Pallasch, members Elaine Pavao, Kimberly Paquette and Jocelyn Sherman were present. Superintendent Sanchioni, Assistant Superintendent Sarah Kraeger, Finance Director Brendon Andrade were also present.
Budget Committee
Budget Committee Chair Mary Wall, members Curt Doberstein, Scott Toner, Dan Deren, John Chelo were present. Absent was Abigail Despre.
Council President Edwards V updated the group on the important upcoming budget process key events budget submission deadlines as outlined by the Charter. A full schedule of the dates was included as backup. Having served himself previously on the Budget Committee, he warned that the process happens fairly quickly, and to expect potential revisions from both the School Committee and the Town sides.
School Committee Chair Diane Farnworth noted that the committee would begin FY26 discussions directly following this meeting, and committed to the March 19 submission deadline. She noted that the school department has used one time funds for several years and that a structural deficit remains. She anticipated making cuts above the FY25 cuts, where a net of 16 full time employees were lost. She added that enrollments have declined by 18 students since last May. She asked that lines of communication remain open and earnest discussions take place.
The Budget Committee members had no comments.
Budget Committee member Wall motioned to adjourn, seconded by Member Chelo, the motion passed unanimously.
School Committee member Farnworth motioned to adjourn, seconded by Member Palasch, the motion passed unanimously.
Town Councilor deMedeiros motioned to adjourn, seconded by Councilor Janick, the motion passed unanimously.
Joint Workshop adjourned at approximately 6:10 PM.
