STATE OF RHODE ISLAND, COUNTY OF NEWPORT
The Town Council of the Town of Tiverton, County, and State aforesaid held a Joint Workshop with the School Committee and the Budget Committee on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Tiverton High School Library, 100 N. Brayton Road.
Council President Edwards V and School Committee Chairman Diane Farnworth called their respective meetings to order at approximately 6:05 PM.
All members and attendees stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Committee member roll calls commenced.
Town Council
President John G. Edwards V, Vice President David J. Paull, Councilors Deborah G. Janick, Denise M. deMedeiros,
Craig R. Committo, Michael Burk, and David Perry were present. Clerk Chabot was also present.
School Committee
School Committee Chair Diane Farnworth, members Elaine Pavao, Kimberly Paquette, and Jocelyn Sherman were present. Vice Chair Deborah Pallasch was absent. Superintendent Haskins and Finance Director Brendon Andrade were also present.
Budget Committee
Budget Committee Chair Scott Toner and member Dan Deren were present. Member John Chelo was absent.
Chair Scott Toner indicated that the Budget Committee did not have a quorum.
Council President Edwards V updated the group on the important upcoming budget process key events budget submission deadlines as outlined by the Charter. The schedule was included as backup.
School Committee Chair Diane Farnworth noted that school aid information would be coming out shortly from the Governor’s Office. The School Committee will be holding budget workshops to review the FY27 budget.
Superintendent Haskins expects state aid numbers on Friday and anticipates a reduction in school aid due to reduced student count and the current funding formula.
The Budget Committee members had no comments.
Councilor deMedeiros asked about the resolution of the school deficit before moving forward. Council President Edwards V stated there would be a presentation of the plan at the 1/26/2026 council meeting.
Councilor Perry asked if the School Committee would be reviewing their budget line by line. School Committee Chair Farnworth indicated that they will review the high-level version first and then a line-by-line version.
School Committee member Farnworth motioned to adjourn, seconded by Member Sherman, the motion passed unanimously.
Town Councilor Committo motioned to adjourn, seconded by Councilor deMedeiros, the motion passed unanimously.
Joint Workshop adjourned at approximately 6:15 PM.
